Civilized Behaviour: Learning to Act with a Proper Sense of Honour and Shame
Ladies and gentlemen, what kind of behavior is proper? And what kind of behavior is shameful? This may be the problem we keep thinking since we began school. A harmonious society is built on civilized behavior. So we should act with a proper sense of honor, not shame, in our society.
My campus is divided into two parts by a street with a traffic light. But each time when both students and teachers cross that street, they don’t care about the lights. I remember I was taught about essential traffic rules in primary school. Why now these college students, even the teachers, still run through the red lights? This kind of shameful behavior doesn’t only appear around my campus, but also throughout the whole city. How pathetic! All the professional knowledge we learned become extremely slight in this situation. Without a doubt, learning to act with a proper sense of honor becomes priority for us students.
As students, we all must face the problem of finding jobs when we graduate. To our surprise, some students only pay attention to the salary or whether they can work in modern, developed cities. A few of the medical students are even thinking about demanding extra money from their future patients. I don’t know whether this kind of future doctors is dedicated only to cure their patients. As we all know, doctors are special due to the nature of their profession. They deal with life and health. Any tiny fault or carelessness could lead to death. The ethics of the medical profession is the most important thing for both doctors and medical students. We should try our best to serve the people and country with our medical knowledge. Our morality and character must be improved if we want to be a qualified doctor.
Of course, there are still a lot of students acting with an honored sense. A girl in one medical university has donated blood three times. Every time my university organizes a trip to the orphanage and rest homes, hundreds of students sign up without hesitation. Members of the acupuncture association in my school often serve the seniors in the community. Our life is also full of this kind of honored behavior. We need only to show it to others.
Ladies and gentlemen, nowadays the fundamental principles of civilized behavior can be ignored no longer. It is said that talented people are the most precious treasures of the 21st century. But who are this kind of people? Those who run through red lights? Those who only concern with money and themselves? Those who destroy the environment? No. Never! The development of society relies on people who are qualified both in knowledge and moral spirits. So, to us, only when we achieve these qualities can we take on the duty to construct our country. Let’s cherish our limited school-time to learn knowledge and to shape our civilized minds, making us qualified owners of the 21st century.
