How We Choose Food Now close your eyes and imagine that a cockroach in your mouth, then you biting it, chewing it, swallowing it. What’s your feeling? Might feel like vomiting. However, it is quite possible that you never eaten it before, and probably no one had told you the feeling before, why you feel nauseated? Do you know in some culture, cockroach can be food? We will discuss it latter, and now I need tell you our topic. We will learn something about how we choose food in this research paper. To discuss how we choose food, sounds like we don’t know it.Actually in BarryGlassner’s book‘The Gospel of Food: Everything You Think You Know about Food Is Wrong’, has shown some mistake of the understanding of the food. I don’t want to let people introspectthemselves, but I will happy to see people have a new cognition. You may think food is just something that is found in nature or something can be eaten after processing, but the truth is that the answer what we considered is still be controlled by our culture. For example, if you contrast flies or cockroaches with hamburgers or potato chips, which group look more like real food? Perhaps are hamburgers or potato chips. Now we need define the meaning of the word ‘food’ before drawing a conclusion, what is the style food need be;what kind of ingredients food need have;what make food like food? 1. Culture influences our choice. Now we can begin with cockroaches and locust, even flies. Believe you or not, cockroaches are healthy than hamburgers, form some research paper, cockroaches and locusts have particular protein. ‘Cockroach and locust brain in vivo of protein composition, can be effective in the laboratory to kill more than 90% of methicillin-resistant’. It happens that there is a similar case. Protein in flies can be more stronger, so some scientist want to prove this kind of protein can be used in the field of sciences and medicine. This is the evidence in the field of science, but people don’t care about it. Even if the research shown cockroaches are delicious, people still refuse to eat it. As I say you never eat it before, why you don’t like it? That is the culture influences. It is normal food for people in tropic. The cockroaches in tropic are big like your finger, and that would be a big meal for Aborigines. For them, hamburgers are strange thing, not food. Letus compare the cockroaches and hamburgers, to see why cockroaches can be called food. This form was made by Kelly D Brownell, we will use some of his research result in this research paper. (Made By K.D.Brownell) Cockroaches Hamburgers Found in nature? yes No Not concocted? Yes No Recognized by the body? Yes No Not harmful? Yes No Do we define it as food? No Yes Does it taste good? We don’t know Yes (Made By Minlen) Chalk Hamburgers

Found in nature? yes No Not concocted? Yes No Recognized by the body? YesCaCO3 No Not harmful? Yes No Do we define it as food? No Yes Does it taste good? We don’t know Yes According to this form, we can found cockroaches are more accord with the definition of what we think food should be.Actually, this form is based on how people defined food, and we can give an adverse example. We defined food by our culture, and the norm is what we know. So if you were burning in tropic, you might like eat cockroaches. 2. Advertisement influence our choice I know for almost all cultures hamburgers are food. Why people believe it like truth? Of course, we know hamburgers can be eaten, but for people who are live in the culture which like eat cockroaches, hamburgers still are food.In other word, something has told us that hamburgers were food. What it is? Perhaps not culture because hamburgers didn’t belong to any original culture. From the paper History and Legends of Hamburgerswe can realize that the beginning of hamburgers was 15th century, but you may never see any classical book, I mean the book which published 100 years ago, mentioned hamburgers. Suddenly hamburgers become the most popular food in America, and third world countries. In this paper, author mentioned “The hamburger gets its first widespread attention at the 1904 World's Fair in St. Louis, Missouri, also known as the Louisiana Purchase Exhibition, where it created a sensation. A reporter for the New York Tribune wrote from the 1904 St. Louis World's Fair of a new sandwich called a hamburger, “the innovation of a food vendor on the pike.” By “Pike” he meant the World's Fair midway.” World's Fair is a good advertisement in the day no televisions, even now people still crazy for different exhibitions. For instance, women would like to hear the word --Paris Fashion Week. Hamburgers are a symbol of junk food, but we cannot stop eat it even if we know is junk food. Why does this happen? From the research ofEating More; Enjoying Less By Pew Social Trends Staff we can see this form. In this research paper, we can find advertisement is a big deal to influence our social life. “Both groups agree that convenience is the biggest reason for America’s junk food habit. But among those who say they rarely or never overeat junk food, there is a greater tendency to stress the importance of advertising as a factor in the consumption of junk food by others.” 3. How society, for example the government, influenced our choice? People in third world might believe coca-cola is better than their water. That is a big problem because it may lead people to a wrong way of understanding food. The health minister of china says that nutrition is a bigger problem than under nutrition. Scenes like this are becoming more
