22nd Winter Universiade opens in Austria The opening ceremony of the 22nd Winter Universiade was held amid applause, chanting, waving flags inside the Olympic World Stadium in Innsbruck, western city of Austria on Wednesday. The games, with a record entry of 53 countries and regions participating, is the biggest ever winter universiade, surpassing 50 entrants of the 21st WU in Italy. Heinz Fischer, President of the Republic of Austria, declared the games open. In his speech Fischer said: "On behalf of Austria, I am glad to welcome you to the major international sporting event." Present at the games were Michael Bielowski, President of the Organizing Committee, and George E. Killian, FISU president. China sent a 92-member contingent and may take five medals. "Our aim is to accumulate more experience for these young students," said Zhang Xinsheng, chief-de-mission of the Chinese delegation. The 11-day games, which takes place every two years in various cities all over the world, will feature 69 gold medals of 11 sports events of alpine skiing, cross country, skiing, ski jumping, nordic combined, biathlon, ice hockey, short track speed skating, figure skating, snowboard and skeleton. WU2005 is the largest ever, said organizer More than 1,500 athletes from 53 countries and regions, more than ever before, will be participating in the Winter Universiade Innsbruck/Seefeld 2005, said organizers on its official website. In addition to the athletes, about 600 officials will be present. The Austrian delegation comprises 133 competitors, one of the largest delegations, behind those of Russia, Japan and China with more than 150 competitors. The number of competitors and of the participating countries and regions of former Universiades are therefore surpassed the 21st Winter Universiad in Tarvisio of Italy, which featured 1,266 athletes from 44 countries and regions. In 1968 already, Innsbruck hosted a Winter Universiade with 424 athletes from 26 countries. The participants in the WU 2005 are 17 to 28 year-old students who are mainly active in national squads. Only very few of them are practicing their sport as a leisure activity. "The number of participants of the last Universiades was surpassed which proves an increased interest in the Winter Universiade" said Karin Sigle, member of the organizing committee of the WU2005. And Hermann Filipic, president of the Austrian Speed Skating Association, is equally enthusiastic: "Some delegations will be represented by their top short track athletes. So we are looking forward to competitions on an extremely high level". The WU 2005 will be a special high-class event thanks to a vast and varied program with 69 medal competitions, taking place mainly in Innsbruck and Seefeld.
