Do you ever try to understand the other people? And do you know how to understand the other people? There’s a girl named Margaret Mead spend most of her life
to understand more about people. Sounds interesting? Want to know more about her?
Margaret Mead was born in 1901, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
When she was in the college, a professor told her: “Perhaps you could find the
answer to a very important question: Do all boys and girls, no matter where they
live, find it difficult to grow up into happy adults?” she heard, so she thought she would very much like to know the answer to that question, so she go to live
among the people of Samoa. She tried to eat with her finger. She learned to speak Samoa’s language. Samoa’s
people were so pleased that they built a house with no wall for her, so she can see and hear everything that goes around her. She noticed Samoa’s people everyday, and she found that Samoa’s children were very easy to grow up into happy adults. When she finished the visit of Samoa, she wrote her first
book: Coming of age in Samoa. The book became very famous. “What an exciting book,”said some. “I can almost feel what it’s like to be in Samoa!”
So Margaret began travelling again. She visited other 7 different primitive
tribes and studied their ways to understand them, and then, she wrote 24 books
by herself, and 18 more with other people. When Margaret was more then 70 years
old, people still flocked to hear her. She was famous as usual.
So that’s the story of Margaret Mead. Now you know, when you understand someone
else’s point of view, both you and that other person will feel happier.
Understanding is really important, isn’t it?
