'Je Maintiendrai (I shall Maintain)' was the Orange motto once on the ensign of William III during his arrival to England during the Glorious Revolution and it, too, has always been an important motto for me, for together with passion and interests on History & politics, they have always drive me towards my achievements in life and at school. Influenced by my grandparents, I was taught at a very young age to have a curiosity about worldwide history and events , more importantly, to think about and to analyse them. Later, through conversation with my father about documentary films and elementary books, I was fascinated by Roman history (which had my first attempt of historical essay writing), history of late Qing Empire and the British Raj in India.
In recent years, my interest in history has shifted slightly towards 19th C. Europe. In previous IB school, I created my Extended Essay topic as 'To What Extent Was Kaiser Wilhelm II Personally Involved in the Outbreak of the WWI'. I analysed the Kaiser's influence on international relations back then by his aggressive & opportunist attitude, personal support for the naval expansion & attempts at peacekeeping, in the process I was then extremely obsessed by the subject and explore more deeperly about the German bureaucrat system and Junker interests behind it. Although due to my early departure I never had the chance to submit the final work, the drafts were greatly appreciated by my tutors. Moreover, by reading lengthy academic books in English I not only gained knowledge itself but also methods of researching and more interest in the academic learning process and Pre WWI empires.
Currently, as I selected the Modern European History & Politics module in UCL's University Preparatory Course, together with the reading of 'the Prince', 'an Introduction to Political Philosophy', the political history of modern Europe tends to be more specific and systematic to me. Learning theories produced by John Locke, Thomas Hobbes and the continental philosophers then comparing them with the two constitutions in the French Revolution has led me into more complex debates about forming governments.
Besides the knowledge itself, I regard the critical way of thinking as an important element of study, which involves questioning which I have learnt from the ToK course in the IB, and now on the UPCH, relate them with the theories of de Saussure, Barthes and Freud, Cultural Theory and Research Method course.
In addition, my participation in the Model UN in August 2012 was another major inspiration for my desire to attend courses relating to IR. Throughout the process of debating and discussing, I found myself keen on political speeches. I am also planning to join the 1878 Berlin Conference historical council of WE Model UN (WEMUN) in Aug 2013.
Being an administrator of a large internet forum which is under the topic of the UK (powered by 'Baidu', my ID is 'the Maharaja de Kashmir') shows my favour towards the country & it has taught me lessons of leadership, responsibility and communication & negotiating skill. Moreover, by making relative rules and defending the forum from nationalists & anarchists I have also gained a political perspective and a chance to mock the knowledge on politics in practise.
Concerning other activities, travelling may be worth mentioning, because we have a trip in almost every holiday, either domestically or abroad, learning or relaxing. Experiences such as joining the Bat Mitzvah in Israel, horse riding in Mongolia & learning English in Perth, Western Australia, have always refreched my interpretation of the world.
Finally, I am really looking forward to devoting myself in courses at university and thereupon to also meeting their challenges, because people have always told me that the college stage is of the utmost importance, I shall treasure it and dedicate my effort to both academic studies and non-academic activities.
