The team is hoping (fingers crossed!) for an opt-in beta patch before we hit the weekend so everyone can give it a spin. At least that's the goal, provided there are no major crashes or other show-stopper bugs. And as some of you have noted from the steamdb entry, build updates have been quite active lately and almost on a daily basis due to constant fixes and additions, so I think we're close.
Just to lift the curtain a bit for some of the behind-the-scenes activity, the challenge with code change/fix, especially on GameCube's 9-year old game engine, is that any change made can result in unpredictable and unexpected bugs that may crop up elsewhere. It's essentially a virtual Whack-a-mole.
That is exactly what happened to some of the unexpected bugs that cropped up in Mercenaries mode at release when a seemingly benign, small change was made to the main game right before release date. Same thing with the light bloom effect that was disabled at the last minute due to unwanted clipping issues that were present in some areas of the level (good news: some of these bloom light effects will be restored in the upcoming patch!)
Anyway, more will be revealed when the first beta patch is formally announced here. Mouse optimization, gameplay fix/tweaks, relabeled menu options, some 60fps animation fixes, etc. We'll have a detailed change list so you know what to look out for. Please stay tuned.
