1. What is Plain English?
"The great enemy of clear language is insincerity. " - George Orwell
Language is the vehicle of thought. We are looking for usage which is genuine and direct, unspoiled by any hint of the bogus or the pretentious, english which is clear and open at the day, which claims no special to itself but rather melts away in what it conveys. That should be the standard usage of speakers and writers.
With an instructive purpose, this post has one main aim: to help you write and set out information clearly. I say a guide, not rules. Plain English cannot be measured by formulas. It is not an absolute. It does not mean using simple words or kindergarten language throughout the whole document.
I describe plain English as using appropriate structure and layout to illustrate your ideas in an organized manner, enabling the readers to understand the message you conveyed at the very first glance.
Plainness is more than austerity. In the following chapters, I will explain how English language should be used in terms of the construction of sentences, preference of words and clauses, and the basics of clear layout. It may not be helpful in the exams, especially the ones in China. Writing will remain a hard task. But I assure you that this post will shred some light on your way to become a good writer.
