佛家的因缘说中，"因"是必然的因果，"缘"是随机的联系。"缘"字本义为以绳牵猪的动作，一说现被认作甲骨文"绿"字的实为"缘"字（两者在小篆中类同），是打水时以绳系住器皿口部那一圈边沿。两种解释均含"建立联系"的基本引申义。

因（PURPOSE）自缘（CONNECTION）起，果（END）以合（UNITY）终。
因缘巧合（COINCIDENCE），自性本空（EMPTINESS）.
