There is no denying that whether college students should study a second language as basic science or not has become a controversial topic. From my point of view, I reckon that both advantages and disadvantages exist when a second language is regarded as a fundamental curriculum.
Initially, the reason why I recommend that students are supposed to take the language course same as math, chemistry and physics, etc. is that not only can they gain more employment opportunities, but also extend the scope of knowledge, which indicates that learning a second language enables students to get acquainted with variety of exotic culture, traditions as well as customs, which serves as a function to enlarge their vision of knowledge, meanwhile, majority of companies, nowadays, pose higher standard and requirement to new employees, not only focusing on diplomas, but also individuals abilities, thus it contributes to the increase of employment opportunities by mastering another foreign language. For example, I was in an interview for a part time job, whereas candidates were required with computer and language skills, which led me to the failure in the end. Consequently, it undoubtedly leads students to acquire variety of benefits in a wide range of aspects.
On the contrary, something is never without its drawbacks. Learning a second language usually poses confusion to newcomers in their familiar domains, thus beginners probably suffer stress on account of the negative impacts on existing courses. Besides, never have bilinguals got rid of the threat posed by the cultural invasion. For example, Christmas, nowadays, is increasingly popular among Chinese youngsters, even surpassing any other traditional festival such as the Mid-autumn festival, thus the preservation of domestic tradition is likely to be phased out.
From what has discussed above, we can safely draw the conclusion that whether language course should be added in curriculum as basic science still demands further discussion.
