The Western Han Dynasty(206B.C.-24A.D.)saw, both in court and among the civilians, the popularity of dance, music, acrobatics and sleight of hand. Later on, song and dance dramas were developed, and action and dialogue were introduced to unfold the plot.

Zaju, poetic drama set to music, first appeared during the Song and Jin Dynasties. The most noticeable were those wouthern dramas, generally referred to as nanxi, occuring mainly in Fujian and Zhejiang provinces. Modern dramas are, in a way, reminiscent of Zaju. Zaju reached its peak in the Yuan Dynasty, producing a great number of classics and outstanding playwrights. During the Ming Dynasty, Zaju gave way to various local operas with different vocal styles.
