MANY YEARS LATER as he faced the firingsquard(行刑队)，Colonel Aureliano Buendeia was to remember that distant afternoonwhen his father took him discover ice.At that time Marondo was a village oftwenty adobe(泥制的)house,built on the bank of a river ofclear water that ran along a bed of a river of polished stones,which were whiteand enormous ,like prehisrotic eggs.

The world was so recent that many thingslacked names,and in order to indicate them it was necessary to point.Every yearduring the month of march a family of ragged gypsiess would set up their tentsnear the village,and in with a great upoar(喧闹)of pipes and kettledrums they would display newinventions.First they brought the magnet (磁铁).A heavygypsy with an utamed(无法抑制的)beard and sparrow(麻雀)hands,who introduce himself as Melquiades,put on a bold(大胆)public demonstration(示威游行)he himself calledthe eighth wonder of the learned alchemists(炼金师)ofMacedonia.

Jose arcadio buendia,whose unbridledimagination always went beyond the genius of nature and even beyond miraclesand magic,thought that it would be possible to make use of that useless inventionto extract(提取)goldfrom the bowels of the earth.
Mequiades,who was an honest man,warned him:”It won’t work for that.”But Jose Arcadio Buendia at that time did not believein the honesty of gypsies,so he traded his mule（骡） and a pair of goats for the two magnetized ingots.

In March the gypsies returned.This time theybrought a telescope(望远镜) and a magnifying（放大的） glass the size of adrum,which they exhibited as the latest discovery of the Jews of Amsterdam,Theyplaced a gypsy woman at one end of the village and set up the telescope at theentrance to the tent.For the price of five reales,peole could look into thetelescope see the gypsy woman an arms length away.

“Sciencce has eliminated(消除)distance,”Melquiades proclaimed(公告).”In a short time,man will be able to see what is happening in anyplace in the world without leaving his own house.”A burning noonday sun broughtout a starling(令人吃惊的) demonstration(示范) with the gigantic(巨大的)magnifying glass:theyput a pile (堆)of dry hay(干草) inthe middle of the street and set it on fire by concentrating the sun’s rays(射线).

Jose Arcadio Buendia made no attempt toconsole(安慰)her,completelyabsorbed in his tactical(战术的)experiments with theabnegation(拒绝)of a scientist and even at the risk ofhis own life.In an attempt(企图)to show the effects ofthe glass on enemy troojps,he exposed himself to the concentration of the sun’srays and suffered burns which turned into sore(疡)thattook a long time to heal.
