一个传统Describe an interesting tradition in your country. You should say:
What it is
What do people do
What is interesting about it
And explain how you feel about this tradition
A tradition in my country is celebrating the Mid-Autumn Festival, which is on the 15th day of August in Chinese lunar calendar. During this festival, people would eat moon cakes. Mooncakes are like cookies in shape with various fillings including nuts, red bean, egg yolk and meet, etc. They are round, which symbolises the full moon and family reunion. In addition, during the festival, all family members try their best to go home and enjoy a feast together. Besides mooncakes, other typical dishes for the dinner are crab, duck and taro.
As for what is interesting about it, the moon on the festival night is believed to be the fullest and brightest of the whole year. Then it has been a ritual for every family to appreciate the full moon together at night. When I was a kid, I believed that there were fairies on the moon and I could only see them on the festival night.
When it comes to how I feel about this tradition, I think it’s quite romantic and comforts me a lot when I am away from home. It is said that even a family member is not at home, he or she must be appreciating the same moon with other beloved ones, seeming like they are together. So when I studied abroad, every time when I missed my parents, I would look up at the moon, which relieved my home sickness.

What is the most magnificent festival in China?
The grandest and most popular festival in China should be Chinese New Year, also known as Spring Festival, with a 7-day long holiday. China during this period is dominated by red lanterns, loud fireworks and massive banquets. It’s also time for family reunion in which family members enjoy a hearty meal together.
What do people do during the festival?
There are many things that people would do during Spring Festival. Even half month before the festival, housewives would do house cleaning and decorating to make sure that the house is rid of the old year’s dust and is well prepared for taking in the fortune of the New Year. Then children would decorate the house with the bright colour with red lanterns, Chinese knots and couplets. Besides, there are many traditional performances during the festival like lion dance. The dancers would demonstrate various types of martial arts through different forms and gestures, which is really impressive.
Do you think people now attach more or less importance to traditional festivals compared with the past?
I feel that people attach less importance to traditional festivals nowadays. On the one hand, those who are occupied by heavy workloads just want to take the chance to have a rest during the festival. They are unwilling to celebrate these festivals. On the other hand, an increasing number of young people are keen on western festivals like Christmas and Valentine’s Day because they feel it trendy and romantic.
What is the difference between traditional and modern lifestyle, and why does it happen?
The major difference is that the past lifestyle is simple, slow and home-based. While the present one is quite complex, efficient and technological. It seems that the whole life today is dependent on technology and machines. This is because people nowadays earn more money and they have higher demands for spiritual comfort and entertainment. Besides, the technological advances make the modern life more convenient but more complicated.
Nowadays, people like Halloween and Christmas. Do you think it is an addition or a replacement of other festivals?
I don’t think other festivals would be replaced by these western festivals. Nowadays, people enjoy Christmas and Halloween mainly because it’s quite fashionable among younger generations. Many of them have no idea about the significance or meaning of these festivals. While traditional festivals are an expressive way to celebrate glorious heritage, culture and traditions specific to a country, which should never be taken lightly.
