这个词语出于James Hervey所写的一首赞美诗。在西方宗教里，blessing 表示的是上帝的青睐、佑祝或赐福；而in disguise表达了乔装打扮的、被掩藏起来的，表示人事先无法看到。所以a blessing in disguise就是“被掩藏起来的或经过乔装打扮的但最终会让人得福的事情”。也就是说，本来就是祝福，但是先装扮成祸事的样子，表面上看起来不好，实际上是好事。亦即“塞翁失马，焉知非福”，由此引申而成“因祸得福”
