Evading Apollos & Vindicators
The Allied Apollo Fighter is the best air-to-air unit in the game. Neither Tengus nor MiGs are able to take them down when the numbers are even, but the Apollo has a weakness. When the target comes too close to it, the Apollo turns and tries to get some distance between him and his target. More so in the Empire vs. Allies match-up; there is a time at the beginning of the game when you cannot defend against Vindicator strikes. Early on, when the Allied Vindicators are coming in to try to destroy your few VXs and Tengus, these losses of one or two units can really add up. With good micro skills, you will be able to lift your grounded units so they don't get damaged, but then an Apollo is waiting and will finish the job as he destroys your VX or Tengu.
To save your units from that Apollo, it's very useful to use a special type of micro to prevent the Apollo killing all your units. All you need to do is to follow the Apollo wherever it tries to run when your unit gets to near to him. Taking advantage of the long turn around time the Apollo has is key to survival.
As an example, when your Striker VX is about to be bombed to heaven by a Vindicator, the Striker VX lifts up right at the moment when it would get damaged. This is the most effective way to dodge Vindicator bombs but it takes a lot of training to press "F" in the right moment. This perfect moment is when you can see the first bomb coming out of the Vindicator. This micro also works with Tengus and even with Tsunami Tanks. Just activate the special armor and the Tsunami Tank can take 6 Vindicator bombs with health to spare, which means that it takes more then 2 Vindicator to destroy it.
This micro technique is also possible with Tengus and Twinblades. The way you do it with VX or Twinblades are the same: click “D“ one time, so the unit is flying backwards, and try to get as close to the Apollo as possible. The Apollo will turn then and you follow it. That's kind of easy because the VX or Twinblade can instantly turn. The Tengu is tougher to keep alive than the VXs or Twinblades because they are not able to fly backwards, so they aren't able to instantly turn. This technique takes some practice to pull off, but offers great rewards when it works.
Always remember that this micro technique only works when the Apollo is not microed well. But it's definitely worth trying it because with the special micro technique you can fight one Apollo with just two Tengus without loosing anything or just one Tengu!
