Portfolio A non-returnable portfolio is required of all MArch applicants, including those who do not have a previous architecture degree or background. The portfolio should include evidence of recent creative work by the applicant: personal, academic and/or professional. Work done collaboratively should be identified as such and your role in the project defined. Your name, address, and the program to which you are applying should also be included. We expect that the portfolio will be produced by the applicant. If the portfolio has been produced by someone other than the applicant, this must be clearly identified in the portfolio documentation. While there is no strict format, all the material should be contained in one portfolio document. We have found that 8-1/2" x 14" x 1" (22 x 35.5 x 2.5 cm) or smaller; notebooks are most suitable. We suggest that you select a limited number of examples of your work that can be reviewed with ease by the admissions committee. Please do not send slides, CDs or videos. Web-based portfolios are not acceptable and will not be reviewed. We recommend that you choose projects that you care about, that you think are interesting, that you think are representative of your best work and speak to your design potential. Application Deadline The Application for Graduate Admission is requested directly from the MIT Office of the Dean for Graduate Education (ODGE). An application for admission in September must be received by December 15. Portfolios may be sent by January 3 to allow for students to include their most recent work. It is the responsibility of the applicant to be sure that the completed application forms and all supporting materials are at the following address by the deadline. MIT Department of Architecture

Application Materials
Write your name clearly on every item. Use the same name on all items and correspondences.
Begin the application process weeks in advance of the deadline. Try to get all test scores and recommendation letters in hand and ready to send at least 1 week prior to the deadline. Plan to send early to save mailing fees.

Original recommendation letters can be sent to you in a signed/sealed envelope and forwarded to our office.
Try to send your materials in as few envelopes as possible, i.e., in one package. This cuts your costs and reduces waste, but it also helps keep your materials together. Please be mindful of the materials used in your packaging. (Recyclable packaging is appreciated, but will not influence your chances of admission.)
Do not present your application forms and paperwork in a binder. Your paperwork should be printed on plain white paper, simply stapled. If you place every page in a separate plastic sleeve in a fancy notebook, we will need to spend time to disassemble it and discard the notebook.
Research our faculty members and the work they are doing. Make note of the work you find interesting in your personal statement. A match between your academic pursuits and the work performed here is important. Additional information is available on the School of Architecture and Planning website, in the Portfolio section.

    Portfolio
Spell "architecture" correctly on your portfolio.
Spend more time on the work presented in your portfolio than on the portfolio itself.
When printing your portfolio, save a digital copy, and make several back up copies. Have these ready in case yours is lost in the mail.
Send us the final version of your portfolio. Do not send replacement versions. These are likely to be confused with the original copies. Proof every word in your portfolio before printing it.
The design of your portfolio should be friendly to the reader and allowfor convenient handling. Complex designs with ornate folds or multiple pieces of different sizes make review difficult.
Your portfolio will be placed into a folder and circulated among several faculty members. It should not fall apart as a result of this handling.
We do not require a CV or resume, but if you must include one, please make it a part of your portfolio or writing sample.
    Late Applications
    Will not be reviewed.
