Sharingan no Kakashi probably /should/ have been able to deflect that overenthusiastic hug from a sopping wet Naruto, but he was... rather distracted at that point in time.
(Especially as Naruto always seemed to have an aversion to proper clothing when he put himself through extensive training.)

A shadow edged onto Kakashi's desk, and he glanced out of the window to see a youth strolling past, with hair like an exploding dandelion and a strand of foxtail grass between his teeth.
It quivered (or maybe danced) a little with each step the boy took, and Kakashi wondered where he got it from.
Most people viewed foxtail as a weed, after all, preferring to keep it off their lawns as much as possible.
(And, as an afterthought, he also wondered just how the boy could walk by a window on the ninth floor.)

He hated the fact that they would let someone go on a suicide mission without even /trying/ to find another solution. He hated it even more when he realised why such a decision had been made.
        Because they were afraid.
Because it was the easiest way.
        Because the sacrifice was /willing./
        .
/To hell with that,/ Naruto thought, and chased after his idiot of a sensei.
He wasn't afraid of anything – neither the enemy's impossible strength, nor the consequences of committing treason – except failure. Because it was Kakashi's /life/ at stake.
It was hell difficult, it was impractical, and it was a risk that no responsible shinobi should take. He didn't care, because it was /wrong/ and...
And he didn't want Konoha – his Konoha, /their/ Konoha – to be built on death and sacrifice.
He wanted his home to be built on the bonds and hopes and dreams they all shared.
Naruto had people to protect and ideals to fight for. He would throw his life in against the odds if it was necessary. They all would, he knew.
But he wouldn't allow it as long as there was another way.

Kakashi looked on in curious, watchful silence as Naruto hesitated. Blue eyes narrowed as they drifted slowly to the side, slanting downwards. His gaze was parallel to the shadows cast by his long, blond lashes, flickering above high cheekbones.

Naruto literally /splatted/ on the table, laughing helplessly, as Kakashi spluttered and flailed in mortification.

The boy gave him what was halfway between a huff and a squinty pout, crossly puffing out a breath of air which made the stray locks of his hair jump, as if startled, before settling disgruntledly and messily in front of his forehead.

And then, in the dusky darkness lit by the pale blue glow of the backstage walk lights, Naruto grabbed him by the tie and kissed him.

Chuunin Hatake Kakashi's first impression of the mysterious Naruto person was that he was absolutely /crazy/.
But he owed that brightly-coloured human-shaped glob of insanity his father's life – and despite how unimpressively young Kakashi was, he was not one to leave his debts unpaid.
Naruto, whoever he really was, had saved Hatake Sakumo from himself.
(Sometimes, when Kakashi wondered what could have happened if the teenager who was utterly raving /mad/ hadn't butted his head into their lives, he might have felt perhapsjustalittle terrified.)

"Hmm... I was lost on the road of life again, and when I tripped over a tree's root I realised I was going to be late. It was really cold so I didn't feel like moving, but the sun kept poking and poking at my eyelids – which was really annoying – thus I decided to get up and crawl back here."

Naruto landed on Kakashi's bed (which squeaked indignantly) with a happy bounce, pulling him along, and afterwards sleepily abducted his shuriken-patterned blanket for the rest of the night.

He fell asleep leaning against the cool surface of the Memorial Stone, and woke up with the imprint of a name on his face.
(It was the name he would never have a chance to call again.)

He blinked, frantic worry turning into surprise when the bandaged hand of a semi-conscious Kakashi tiredly tugged him towards the hospital bed – it was the first time he found himself successfully interrupted mid-rant.
