Patented in 1961, this is only one of three known prototypes of George Wilson's advanced 45 ACP target pistol. Originally developed as proof of theory models for a system to reduce muzzle climb, the Wilson Pistol is intentionally arranged to place the barrel directly in line with the web of the thumb, as opposed to above the web as is seen in most semi-automatics. As a result, the force of recoil goes directly back into the operator's hand and arm, with virtually zero "flip", permitting a higher rate of aimed fire. This is achieved with a breechblock design that was rather radical at the time; in essence, the slide terminates immediately behind the chamber, with a sliding dust cover in place to prevent exposure of the magazine and working parts. In spite of the design's near 50 year age, the overall profile seems futuristic, with a beautifully contoured slide riding above the barrel, muzzle mounted Patridge front and frame mounted adjustable rear sights, and a sleek grip angle. The slide is marked "MATCH (bullseye) .45ACP" on each side, "PATENTED MAR. 21, 1961/ No. 2,975, 680" on the upper left side, "GEORGE A. WILSON/ MEDIA, PENN., U.S.A." on the upper right, and the serial number on top, which is repeated on the frame. Controls are a manual thumb safety and a slide catch, located on the left side directly above the extra-wide smooth trigger with adjustable stop. Smooth wraparound grips, with a checkered front strap and the magazine catch on the underside. Included with the gun is a large amount of documentation, including copies of the patent papers, correspondence from the inventor himself (including advice for care and maintenance), blueprints of the individual components (including material, heat treatment and finish instructions) and a wooden mockup of GAW-1, the first of this series of pistols.
