An Introduction to Matt Damon’s movies Early Life Matt Damon was born in 1970 in Boston, Massachusetts, the son of a stockbroker, and an early childhood education professor.
Educated at Cambridge's Rindge and Latin School, Damon was accepted at Harvard University as an English major, but dropped out 12 credits short of graduating to pursue his acting career.
However, his film career failed to take off, and it was not until 1992, when he had a starring role in School Ties, that he was again visible to movie audiences. As the film was a relative failure, Damon's substantial role failed to win him notice, and he was back to laboring in obscurity.
Damon left Harvard in spring of 1993 — headed for Hollywood and a role in “Geronimo: An American Legend,” however, it was not so successful as Damon thought. He auditioned for a part in Primal Fear (1996) that was eventually played by Edward Norton.
It was around this time, fed up with his Hollywood struggles, that Damon contacted Affleck. the two finished Good Will Hunting, based on a screenplay that Damon had turned in as part of an assignment at Harvard.Film companies loved this script and they bid for it. However, when Matt and Ben insisted that they play the lead roles of the film screen played by themselves, the companies rejected.
His breakthrough role was a drug-addicted soldier in Courage Under Fire (1996). The role required him to lose 40 pounds in 100 days for two day’s acting. After following a self-prescribed diet and fitness regimen to lose the weight, Damon was told after filming that he was fortunate his heart did not shrink. He took medication for a year and a half afterwards. Courage Under Fire gained him some critical notice, as The Washington Post labeled his performance "impressive";Damon has stated that it was worthwhile to risk his health in order to properly portray his character and show the industry how committed he was to his work as an actor.
His performance in Courage under Fire gained the notice of Francis Ford Coppola, who invited Damon to play the lead actor in his new film The Rainmaker(1997).
After buying the rights from Castle Rock, Miramax gave the green light to put the film into production.
